Fresno County Office of Education - Migrant Education, Region IV - Ruben V. Castillo, Senior Director

American Union

We at American Union are committed to an inclusive program for all of our families. We acknowledge the contribution of our Migrant families and respect the values that they have instilled in their children through hard work and respect. At the same time, we recognize the challenges that Migrant families face regarding a high quality education with high expectations for their children.

We continue to work to provide equal access to program participation and are committed to providing essential information in Spanish and English, the predominant languages of our Migrant families. We are also improving our efforts to reach out to our Southeast Asian families, some of whom are also Migrant and who are historically under-represented in school and community affairs.

Program Descriptions

Regular School Year Objectives

All Migrant Students at American Union participate in Structured English Immersion classrooms, with supplemental support provided by Migrant Instructional Aide (Anna Ortiz), and Mini Corp. All Migrant Students who are designated as an English Learner are also supported by certificated classroom teachers, and EL support teacher.

Summer School Objectives

Our Migrant Summer Program involves a dual District/Migrant Summer School which includes two certificated teachers providing services to migrant students during the specified timeframe, and Mini Corp support. We also provide each of our migrant students grade P-3 through 8 with Continuous Learning Packets for the summer. Each student's progress is monitored by our Community Liaison- (Anna Ortiz) two times during the summer months. RIF books are also distributed at this time to students.

Fifteen of our migrant students are also invited to participate in Outdoor Ed program sponsored by Fresno County Office of Education.

I & R Process

Identification & Recruitment

Our district uses various strategies to identify and recruit migrant families. Some of which include developing a partnership with community members to assist with the identification a new families to our area. We also value the assistance of our current migrant families who have been very useful in informing us when new families move in. We also use such strategies as coordinating with surrounding schools to track family movement, reviewing enrollment sheets for all entering students, as well as being familiar with the areas where annual migration usually occurs.

I & R is done year round by our Migrant Liaison (Anna Ortiz), however during the summer months is when we actively recruit most of our families.

Assessment Tools

All migrant students are assessed annually using various state, and district assessments. Our Pre-K students are assessed by Regional Needs Assessments and the Brigance Assessment. Migrant students in grades K through 8 are assessed using district adopted multiple measure, STAT test results. District's writing exams, Math Criteria Reference Exams, Reading readiness Assessments and CELDT.

All data is then accumulated to determine each migrant student's needs, as well as to track student progress, in comparison to non migrant students
