Due West of North Fresno on the banks of the San Joaquin River, rests the small charming community of Firebaugh. Firebaugh, a community steeped in 'real western history,' is named for Andrew T. Firebaugh who established a trading post, and built the Firebaugh Ferry. The famous photo of Migrant mother, Florence Thompson is an example of one of Firebaugh’s Migrant families. In 1933 Florence Thompson, Migrant mother of five, picked cotton for 50 cents a hundred weight. Today, Firebaugh is home to the relentless, self-improving, pioneering spirit of about five-hundred Migrant families! |

Program Descriptions
Regular School Year Objectives
FLDUSD’s Migrant program funds three NCLB highly qualified migrant tutors, one Migrant Clerk, and one Migrant Home Liaison providing supplemental assistance and support to our Priority for Service Migrant students grades K-8.
The District’s Instructional Action Plan focuses on English Language Arts, English Language Development, and Mathematics academic growth for all students. Each school site has a further refined, developed Intervention Plan identifying needs of subgroups including our Migrant and English learners and implementing specific curriculum and teaching strategies to close the achievement gap.
Through the FCOE Migrant RIF (Reading is Fun) program, our K-8 Migrant students have the opportunity to select a book of choice to take home where students can add to their home libraries. FCOE Migrant provides our 4th-12th grade migrant students educational opportunities developing student’s Leadership skills, College awareness, and interpersonal social skills through numerous camps.
PASS (Portable Assisted Study Sequence) is available for migrant students needing additional high school credits and is administered by credentialed staff.
Summer School Objectives
Migrant Summer School, held for our K-8th grade students, runs concurrently with Regular Summer School. In the past, our Migrant summer session curriculum was Voyager. This year our MPAC has requested that, we find another research-based curriculum. We are in the process of fulfilling their request. Our goal is to increase the academic performance of our migrant students. Students not attending our summer program receive Continuous Learning Packets (CLP) from credentialed teachers during home visits. A credentialed teacher monitors a student receiving a CLP during two additional home visits. Our PASS program is available to all high school migrant students at our Migrant Office open daily during summer school.
We make use of the FCOE summer Migrant camps, which include Migrant Scholars at Fresno State, Camp SCICON at Scout Island, Engineering Camp at Cal Poly Pomona and Fresno State as well as the RIF summer distributions.
We offer our students the opportunity to participate in the Migrant Work-Study program that attend summer school. Students are assigned to work with our Technology department, Maintenance Operation and Transportation department, school office personnel, and classroom teachers.

I & R Process
Identification & Recruitment
FLDUSD Migrant funds one Clerk and one Community Liaison for identification and recruitment of migrant students and families. I&R is done year round using strategies such as a registration table at the local migrant camp during the first and second week in April, and again in the month of November. During our Cantaloupe Festival in July FCOE Migrant sends recruiters for I&R. The recruiters set up a registration and information table; additionally they go to migrant camp to recruit. We monitor student registrations at all school sites, attend Kindergarten round-up registration, and receive referrals from counselors, teachers, parents, and other districts.

Parent Meeting & Program Involvement
Our Migrant PAC (Parent Advisory Committee) meets six times annually. Please see the meeting calendar. Our MPAC consists of the seven officer positions and representatives from each of the school sites: Bailey, Mills, Firebaugh Middle School, and Firebaugh High School.
This year our Migrant Mini-Conference will be Saturday, February 28 at Firebaugh Middle School Gilbert Coelho Multi-Purpose Room with sign-in beginning at 8:00a.m. Parents are treated to Keynote speakers, workshops, entertainment, and lunch.
