Since my first summer of teaching in 1979, I have been a part of the Migrant Education Program. Working with Bernice Hostetter was a wonderful way to be welcomed into the migrant family. I also had the pleasure to supervise students at Migrant Outdoor Education for a week at 5-Mile Camp, and that was also a great experience. Each summer thereafter, for at least 10 years, I taught in Migrant Summer School, and later as a resource teacher, had the opportunity to work with high school students in the PASS program. All these experiences have been wonderful, and I have been so fortunate to see several former migrant students now leading successful lives as college graduates.

Program Descriptions
Regular School Year Objectives
During the regular year, our migrant students at the 6-12 grade levels receive the assistance of a credentialed migrant resource teacher. She works part of the day at Fowler High School and part of the day at Sutter Middle School. This was changed from previous years following an analysis of student test results. It was determined that only one migrant student at Malaga was Far Below Basic in language arts, while 23 migrant students at Sutter Middle School and Fowler High were Far Below Basic in language arts on the California Standards Tests.
Summer School Objectives
During the summer session, migrant students who are making successful progress in school may participate in the enrichment science program at the elementary level, which focuses on hands-on experiments for students and field trips to locations such as the Discovery Center and the Downing Planetarium. Those migrant students who need intensive English instruction are served in a special English language development program during the summer session. These students are included in the field trips with the science enrichment component of our migrant program.
All students in the district who are having difficulties with academics are targeted to attend remediation summer school, which is non-migrant funded. This includes students in grades K-12, as well as special education students.

I & R Process
Identification & Recruitment
In our distrist, Magda Cardenas, our liaison and clerk, also has the responsibility to identify and recruit migrant families. She posts signs at grocery stores in our district and asks for help from current program participants when new neighbors or relatives enter the area. In addition, we utilize county migrant recruiters during the summer months to assist with the process.

Health Support Services & Health Clinics
This year, two health clinics have been scheduled for our Migrant Program. During the first clinic, held on Wednesday, October 18 at Fowler High School, sixteen students were served. Six for physical exams, and an additional ten for immunizations, vision, hearing and dental check ups. The pogram was facilitated by the migrant nurse serving our district, Tam Carter. Transportation was provided by Magda Cardenas, our liaison. Assiting with site details was Fowler High School administrator Gary Geringer. Another clinic will be held in the spring. For assistance in this area, contact the migrant program at FCOE.

Professional Development
In addition to the regularly scheduled monthly meetings for identification and recruitment at FCOE, migrant staff also are given many opportunities for professional growth, including local workshops on Step Up to Writing, Fresno Area Reading Council Conference, California Association of Bilingual Education state conferences, and others aimed at specific instructional strategies. Our parents are offered guest speakers on a variety of topics at each monthly meeting, including health issues, college financial aid process, and motivational strategies.
