Program Descriptions

Regular School Year Objectives

The Parlier district provides a number of great programs for it's students, administrators and staff. Some of these are:

The Migrant Mini-Conference

  • PASS Program
  • Migrant Work Study: 10 -12 students (seniors) are placed in different areas of the workplace to take on jobs. One group of 12 work during the first semester. Another 12 work during the second semester and then a third group of 12 seniors are provided jobs so that they can work during the summer.
  • We have a Student Leadership Conference. The first one was held last November. It was so successful that we now have one planned for every year. The Conference includes focus on "leadership for students." A number of prominent people are invited to attend and we also ask the surrounding district to join us and benefit from this great program. There are different presenters and the successful turnout helps the kids to benefit by learning about the local police, communications, and other vocations. There are representatives with booths from Reedley College, the Sheriff's Department, and other great organizations. This conference gives kids a chance to see some things that might be interesting for them to pursue after they graduate.

Summer School Objectives

Parlier provides very good programs for the Summer session. We have the Extended Day PASS program. Work Study programs, Migrant Scholars Program which sends a number of our students to a variety of classes at Fresno State University. We also have Camp SCICON which is a full week of camping with different activity studying nature and other topics specifically designed for 4, 5 and 6th grade students.

Our Summer School provides all the traditional academic curriculum along with other electives.

Parlier also provides the kids with their continuous learning packets which are provisioned by the County Office. These learning packets are distributed according to grade level and contain various reading material, coloring books for the younger kids, activity books and other things so that the kids have many things to work on during their summer vacation.

I & R Process

Identification & Recruitment

Our I & R liaisons use many methods to recruit new students into our migrant program. Recently, a number of families had returned from Texas after a crop season and our I & R staff recruited 100 new students.

The students are found by canvassing door to door in the new apartment complexes. They are also found when families coming to town come into regsitrar's office. Some are recruited by word of mouth.

Our liaisons also go to the day care centers where many new students are also identied.

Assessment Tools

The teacher's aides handle the assessment for our migrant students.

State Assessments:
The state mandates the following tests be administered to all students on an annual basis. The STAR Program is an important part of the state testing system. The battery of tests measures how well students are learning the knowledge and skills identified in the California content standards.

  • STAR: California State Standards (CSTs), grades 2-11 English Language Arts, Mathematics, History Social Science, Writing, Science
  • STAR: CAT/6 NRT; grades 3 and 7 Reading, Math, Language
  • STAR: Aprenda 3 and CAPA
  • CAHSEE: English Language Arts and Mathematics; grades 10-12
  • CELDT: grades K-12
  • SAT, ACT, PSAT; grades 9-12

Parent Meeting & Program Involvement

Parent meetings are held at least six time a year. These MPAC meetings (Migrant Parent Advisory Community meetings) are very beneficial to keep the parents involved in the children's development in school.

Different presenters come out to the meetings each time with something educational to talk to the parents about. At the beginning of the year, a survey is taken as to what parents want to hear about. This helps to provision the balance of the meetings. Topics covered include: nutritional tips on how to eat healthy and prepare healthy meals, discussing obesity, FSU presentations about financial aid, information about diabetes and what symptoms to watch for, etc.

There is also Migrant Mini Conference in May where there are topics covered to further help the parents learn how to benefit from the Migrant program and help in their kid's education.

Health Support Services & Health Clinics

The Mobile Clinic comes out twice a year - plus additional outing for Seniors are provided to cover final immunize for exiting high school and entering college. The health staff come out on service calls helping the kids who do not have medical services available. Particularly valuable are the liaison assisted transport services that make sure the kids can get to their doctor, eye doctor and dentist appointments.

Other Programs

We at Parlier are very proud of our migrant program. We really believe in our migrant parents and their important role to help their children in school. We're here to help the parents as well as the students. If parents have any questions regarding their children's education, we are here to support them.

Some of our staff have been here for over 15 years and they become family and friends to the migrant students and their families. They are always willing to go out of their way to say help and it's very common to exchange courteous hellos when passing each other in the marketplace.

Holiday season is always a special time and we do plenty of giving. We find and spread joy each year by making sure a dress-up Santa Claus visits the families and pass out gifts to those in need. Watching their faces opening gifts is a joy that can't be expressed. We also provide families with a bag of food or a turkey at thanksgiving. It's a very rewarding experience.

Professional Development

Some members of our staff attended the Sacramento I&R conference where we studied the new Migrant handbook. This is a 3 day event -packed with lots to learn. There are different agencies represented there. The conference has all the subjects broken down into components dealing with:

    • what to do in health
    • new rules and regulations
    • and more.
Parents go to an annual migrant regional conference. This year it was held at Fresno State University. This 25 anniversary gathering was sponsored by Fresno County.

There were different workshops on various topics for the parents to benefit from. They learned things that help them to know who they can talk to when they help with certain matters. It also encourages the parents not be timid when they have questions.
