Migrant Education Region IV

Migrant Education Even Start (M.E.E.S.) Program

What is the M.E.E.S Program?

MEES is a family literacy program for Migrant children, age 0 to 7, and their parents. The focus is on preparing Migrant preschool children for the transition to Kindergarten and introducing literature into the home setting. We serve approximately 1000 children and their parents in a home-based setting. This is a yearly grant funded through the California Department of Education, Migrant Education Even Start Program. We are in year 12 of funding for this grant. Our staff consists of 20 Para-educators that provide services in 24 school districts.

First 5 Expansion

This is our most recent grant which enables us to expand the services of our original MEES grant. We will serve Migrant Pre-school children, ages 0 to 5, and their parents. This will include the basic curriculum of school readiness and family literacy in addition to the Tobacco Cessation education component. Staff development meetings are provided monthly by Region IV.

Student Achievement / Evaluation

Student achievement is measured by the Brigance Preschool Assessment. Pre and post testing is required for all three and four year olds enrolled. At the end of the school year a comprehensive evaluation is conducted statewide by an outside evaluator to measure the successes of the MEES/First 5 program.
