Migrant Education Parent Component
The Regional Migrant Parenty Advisory Council consists of one representative from each of the 25 school districts. It meets the fourth Saturday of the month and the executive council meets the first Wednesday of the month. Parents are involved in the planning, operation and evaluation of its programs. Parents also participate in the selection process of migrant personnel.
The 24th Annual Migrant Parent Conference was held on November 19, 2005, with over 250 migrant parent participants. The conference theme was "Strengthening Aliances and Uniting Cultures in Migrant Education". The keynote speaker was internationally acclaimed Dr. Roberto Dansie. He captivated the diverse migrant parent audience. Two sessions were held on various topics including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, CAMP, Woman's Health, Growing Healthy Kids, Father's Role in the Family, Seeds of Hope, and Let's Read Together.
On March 17, 18, 19, 2006, the State Migrant Parent Conference will be held in Los Angeles, CA. One hundred migrant parents from throughout the region will participate.
On May 9, 2006, the Regional Parent Advisory Council will hold its Honor Student Recognition Event whereby 11 graduating migrant students will be recognized for their academic success and receive a scholarship.
The Region has two parent trainers, Rocio Fernandez and Christopher Vang. They are available to districts to provide technical assistance on parent advisory councils and conferences.
