What is Reading Is Fundamental?

Reading is Fundamental (RIF) is the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit children and family literacy organization. RIF programs serve more than 5 million children of all ages in the United States each year.

RIF's Program Goals

  • Provide new, free books and literacy resources to migrant children and their families.
  • Motivate children to read.
  • Generate community support for literacy.

How does RIF work in Region IV?

  • Migrant Education received a grant for the 2005-2006 school year/summer program in the amount of eighty-five thousand dollars ($85,418)
  • The number of migrant students to be served is 12,563 Pre-School to 8th grade
  • Each school district determines if they would like a school year or summer program
  • Migrant Education was awarded an additional grant for the 2005-2006 school year, receiving over 7000 books from Albertson's and Coca-Cola, creating a new partnership

How many books were distributed last year?

Each participating migrant student received 3 free books during the school year program. Migrant students enrolled in summer programs received 2 free books.

  • School year 2004-2005 over 30,000 books
  • Summer program 2005 over 8,000 books
